Engineer's Week Volunteers

Spring 2008 EWeek Classroom Activities

Discover Engineering

EWeek school visits are a brief visit to an area elementary or junior high school by a small team of volunteer engineers like you.  The purpose is to grab the math and science interest of young students so that they might populate tomorrow’s hiring pool of civil engineers.  Visits will be coordinated throughout the spring (not just one week).  Training is provided to the visiting volunteers prior to the scheduled visit, and the visit should take approximately an hour of your time.  See a demonstration of a sample visit about 15 minutes prior to the December ASCE meeting (12/18)!  This program is available to ALL area schools.

Parents

If you are the parent of an elementary or junior high school student, this is the perfect opportunity for you to connect with your child on what you do.  There is only so much a child will process from a speech about SDR-26 Waste Water PVC Pipe and Taming Supercritical Storm Flows Within Short Distances!  A cool experiment in class and activity, or even competition, they can do during a school hour will get across the message you need to convey at this age and will make you a rock star in their eyes…and in front of all his or her friends!  Volunteer and make this happen!

The Letter

A letter has been sent to area teachers and schools inviting them to participate.  If you notice a school of interest is not on the list above, take it personally…get angry…go for a jog around the block and cool off, then send your name and contact information to Laton Carr lcarr@pape-dawson.com, and we will provide you with a copy of the letter that you can provide to the teacher or other decision makers to turn a Discover Engineering school visit into a reality.
